Quick answer

A 6-night Tawang trip from Guwahati costs about ₹14,000–20,000 per person by shared Sumo and guesthouses, ₹30,000–45,000 per person with standard hotels and a private SUV, ₹50,000–70,000 in premium stays, and more for luxury. The SUV and the separate Bum La taxi drive the cost. Indicative 2026 ranges, twin sharing.

Key takeaways

  • The private SUV for 7 days is the biggest line, roughly ₹32,000–45,000 for an Innova, Xylo or Scorpio
  • Bum La needs a local Arunachal-registered vehicle, about ₹5,000–8,000 for the day, plus a permit from Tawang
  • Indian visitors need an Arunachal Temporary ILP, about ₹300–500 per person; pay what the official portal shows
  • Groups of five or six pay 30–40% less per head than a couple because the car cost is shared
  • Hotels in Tawang run ₹1,500–2,500 at budget level and ₹3,000–5,000 at standard; true luxury is scarce
  • All figures are indicative 2026 ranges; road, permit and Bum La status change, so check before you travel

Most Tawang budgets go wrong on one assumption: that the drive is a transfer. It is not. Guwahati to Tawang is roughly 450–550 km of mountain road, depending on route, over two days each way, which means the car is with you for the whole trip and costs more than your hotels. Price the car properly and a Tawang trip becomes easy to plan.

This is how the Shillong Trip Travel Desk costs a Tawang trip for 2026: vehicle rates, the Bum La taxi, permits, hotels, meals and three worked examples. All figures are indicative ranges for Indian travellers, twin sharing, starting and ending in Guwahati.

Where the money goes

For a couple on a standard 6-night trip, the split looks roughly like this:

Cost line Approx. share Notes
Private SUV, 7 days 40–45% Guwahati–Bomdila–Tawang–Dirang–Guwahati
Hotels, 6 nights 25–30% Bomdila or Dirang, then Tawang
Meals 15–18% Hotel dinners, momo and thukpa lunches
Bum La local vehicle and permit 6–8% Separate from your SUV
ILP, entry fees, tips 3–5% Small but unavoidable

Change the group size and the table changes. Six people in one Innova pay a sixth of the car each, and hotels and food become the larger lines.

Vehicle rates for the Tawang loop

Almost every Tawang trip runs on a hired SUV with driver from Guwahati or Tezpur. Arunachal hill rates are higher than plains rates because of the terrain, fuel use and empty return days.

Vehicle Seats Per day (indicative 2026) 7-day Guwahati loop
Innova Crysta 6–7 ₹5,000–6,500 ₹35,000–45,000
Xylo / Scorpio 6 ₹4,500–5,500 ₹32,000–38,000
Bolero / Sumo 7–8 ₹4,000–5,000 ₹28,000–35,000
Dzire / Etios (not advised) 4 ₹3,500–4,500 ₹25,000–30,000
Shared Sumo seat, Tezpur or Guwahati–Tawang 1 ₹900–1,600 one way —

Day rates include fuel and the driver's allowance. Some drivers charge a small night halt; ask. Starting from Tezpur instead of Guwahati saves about 180 km each way and usually one day of hire. Our Guwahati to Tawang road guide covers the route, the Sela Tunnel and where to break the journey.

Starting from Tezpur instead

Tezpur sits on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, about 180 km closer to Tawang than Guwahati, and has its own small airport with limited flights. Starting and ending there cuts roughly a day of car hire off the loop, which saves ₹5,000–6,500 on an SUV. The catch is that Tezpur flights are fewer and pricier than Guwahati's, so the saving on the car can disappear into the air fare. For a group of five or six, flying into Guwahati and taking a bus or shared taxi to Tezpur often works out best. For a couple on a short break, the simplest plan is still a Guwahati car both ways with a night at Bomdila or Dirang each direction.

The Bum La day

Your Guwahati car will not take you to Bum La Pass. The road beyond Tawang is open only to local Arunachal-registered vehicles, usually Sumos, Scorpios or Boleros, arranged through a taxi counter or your hotel. For the full day including Madhuri Lake and PTSO Lake, expect about ₹5,000–8,000 per vehicle for up to five or six people. Solo travellers can sometimes buy a shared seat for roughly ₹1,000–1,500.

The Bum La permit is issued by the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang and then stamped at the Army cantonment, usually the day before, against your ILP and photo ID. Hotels, drivers and operators handle the paperwork, sometimes for a small service charge. Bum La runs on Army permission day by day, is open to Indian nationals only, and closures after snow are common between December and March. Check current status before you travel. Our Bum La permit guide has the step-by-step.

Permits and fees

  • Arunachal Temporary ILP for Indian visitors: applied online with Aadhaar authentication and valid 15 days across the state under the 2026 guidelines. Budget about ₹300–500 per person and pay what the portal shows. Carry it with your original ID for the Bhalukpong check gate. See our Arunachal ILP guide.
  • Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals: arranged through an approved operator, usually for two or more people, with a royalty of about USD 30–50 per person; Bum La is not open to foreigners.
  • Tawang Monastery museum, war memorial, Nuranang Falls: small entry or camera fees, typically under ₹100 per person.
  • Parking and road charges: a few hundred rupees across the trip.

Permit fees are set by the state and change without much warning, so check current status before you travel.

Hotel rates by tier

Tawang has plenty of budget and mid-range rooms and very few genuine luxury hotels. Rates below are per room per night for two adults, peak season. Dirang and Bomdila run about 10–15% lower.

Tier Tawang Dirang / Bomdila What you get
Budget ₹1,500–2,500 ₹1,200–2,200 Guesthouse, geyser, blankets, heater on request
Standard ₹3,000–5,000 ₹2,500–4,500 Hotel with restaurant, room heater, some views
Premium ₹5,500–9,000 ₹5,000–8,000 Better rooms, monastery or valley views
Luxury ₹9,000–15,000 ₹8,000–12,000 Limited supply; book early

Room heaters are often charged separately, ₹300–600 a night, from November to March. For named properties by area, see our hotels in Tawang guide.

Meals

Food is cheap and filling. A plate of momos or thukpa costs ₹100–200 in Tawang market; a thali ₹200–350; a hotel dinner ₹400–800 per head. Budget per person per day:

  • Budget: ₹600–900
  • Standard: ₹1,000–1,500
  • Premium and luxury: ₹1,500–2,500

On the drive days, lunch is at roadside dhabas in Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang or Jang. Carry snacks for Sela, where options are limited in winter.

Why advertised prices look lower

You will see 6-night Tawang packages advertised from about ₹24,000–30,000 per person. That is not out of line with our numbers once you compare the same things. Those "from" prices usually cover the shared cost of the car and a standard room with breakfast, twin sharing, and nothing else. In our couple example below, car and rooms alone work out to about ₹29,500 per person. Dinners, lunches on the road, the Bum La vehicle, permits, heaters and tips are what take the all-in figure higher.

Before you pay a deposit, ask three questions: is the Bum La day included or extra, is the car exclusive to you or shared with another group, and are the Tawang nights in town or 10–15 km out on the Bomdila road?

Budget to luxury at a glance

Per person, 6 nights and 7 days from Guwahati, twin sharing, flights excluded:

Style Stay Transport Per person (indicative 2026)
Budget Guesthouses Shared Sumos, shared Bum La seat ₹14,000–20,000
Standard, couple Standard hotels Private Xylo or Scorpio ₹32,000–45,000
Standard, group of six Standard hotels One Innova ₹25,000–32,000
Premium Better hotels, heaters included Private Innova Crysta ₹50,000–70,000
Luxury Best available rooms Innova Crysta, flexible days ₹75,000 upwards

Worked example: a couple, standard tier

Six nights: Bomdila 2, Dirang 1, Tawang 3. Private Xylo for 7 days.

  • SUV, 7 days: ₹35,000
  • Hotels, 6 nights at ₹4,000 average: ₹24,000
  • Room heater, 4 winter nights: ₹1,600
  • Bum La local vehicle, not shared: ₹6,500
  • ILP for two: about ₹600–1,000
  • Meals, 2 × 7 days × ₹1,200: ₹16,800
  • Entry fees, parking, tips: ₹4,000

Total about ₹88,500–89,000, or ₹44,300 per person. Drop the winter heaters and pick a Scorpio at the lower rate and it falls nearer ₹38,000 each.

Worked example: a group of six

Same route, one Innova Crysta, three rooms.

  • Innova Crysta, 7 days: ₹40,000
  • Hotels, 3 rooms × 6 nights × ₹4,000: ₹72,000
  • Bum La local vehicle: ₹6,500
  • ILP for six: about ₹1,800–3,000
  • Meals, 6 × 7 × ₹1,200: ₹50,400
  • Fees and tips: ₹6,000

Total about ₹1,77,000–1,78,000, or roughly ₹29,600 per person. The car costs each person ₹6,700 here against ₹17,500 for the couple.

Worked example: a solo traveller

  • Shared Sumo Tezpur–Tawang and back: ₹2,400
  • Bus or shared taxi Guwahati–Tezpur and back: ₹800
  • Guesthouse, 5 nights at ₹1,300: ₹6,500
  • Shared Bum La seat: ₹1,300
  • ILP: about ₹300–500
  • Food, 6 days at ₹750: ₹4,500
  • Fees and local taxis: ₹1,000

Total about ₹17,000. Shared Sumos leave early, often by 5–6 am, and fill up in peak months, so reserve a seat the day before.

Costs people forget

Tawang budgets are usually short in the same places:

  • The spare day. Snow at Sela in winter, landslides between Bhalukpong and Bomdila in the monsoon, or a Bum La closure can cost you a day. A spare night in Tawang or Dirang adds a room and a day of car hire, about ₹8,000–10,000 for a couple.
  • Heaters and hot water. From November to March, rooms without central heating charge extra for heaters, and some budget hotels charge for extra buckets of hot water.
  • The driver's stay. Most day rates include the driver's food and lodging. A few do not; ask before you confirm.
  • Warm clothing. If you do not own a down jacket, gloves and snow boots, renting or buying in Tawang market costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees.
  • A Guwahati night. Flights that land after noon rarely allow a same-day start. A night in Guwahati costs ₹1,800–4,000 for a decent room.
  • Oxygen and medicines. Bum La is at about 4,600 m. A small oxygen can and basic altitude medicine, taken on medical advice, cost little but matter.

Package or do it yourself

Solo travellers who are happy with shared Sumos, early starts and simple guesthouses can do Tawang independently for well under a package price. The ILP is online, shared vehicles leave Tezpur and Guwahati daily, and Tawang guesthouses take walk-ins outside peak weeks.

For couples and families, a package usually costs about the same as arranging it yourself and removes the hardest parts: finding a reliable driver who knows the Sela road in winter, arranging the Bum La permit and local vehicle the day before, and rerouting when a road closes. We also think the car is where cutting corners is least wise on this route. Whatever you book, insist on an SUV, a driver with recent Tawang experience, and a written plan for a lost day.

When costs rise and fall

Peak demand in Tawang comes in two blocks: April to June, when summer holidays and clear weather bring families, and October to November, when skies are sharpest and festivals run. Expect hotel rates 15–30% above our tables and fewer free cars; book 6–8 weeks ahead.

December to February brings snow at Sela Pass and Bum La. Rates can be reasonable, but budget one spare day for closures and pay for heaters. July to September is the cheapest period, with discounts from many hotels, but landslides can hold you on the road for hours. Check current road status before you travel.

How we'd plan it

For a first trip we plan six nights from Guwahati: day one to Bomdila, day two a short hop to Dirang to help with the altitude, day three through the Sela Tunnel or over the pass to Tawang with Nuranang Falls on the way, day four for Tawang Monastery and the war memorial, day five for Bum La and Madhuri Lake, day six back down to Bomdila, and day seven to Guwahati.

That is our Tawang via Dirang and Sela package, from ₹29,000 per person for rooms and the car. The Tawang with Bum La and Madhuri Lake trip adds a spare day for permits and weather, and Winter Tawang and Sela Snow times the route for snow. If you want Kaziranga on the same trip, the Kaziranga and Tawang package links the rhino country around Kohora with the Tawang road via Tezpur. For a day-by-day version with drive times, read our Tawang itinerary.

Send your dates, group size and hotel tier on our contact page and we will cost the trip with named hotels and a confirmed vehicle.

Questions people ask

01What is the cost of a Tawang tour package from Guwahati?

A 6-night, 7-day Tawang package from Guwahati costs roughly ₹30,000–45,000 per person for a couple in standard hotels with a private SUV, and ₹25,000–32,000 per person for a group of six sharing one vehicle. Budget trips by shared Sumo start near ₹14,000. These are indicative 2026 ranges excluding flights to Guwahati.

02How much does a taxi from Guwahati to Tawang cost?

A one-way private SUV from Guwahati to Tawang costs about ₹17,000–30,000 in 2026, depending on vehicle and season. Most travellers keep the car for the full loop instead, which costs roughly ₹32,000–45,000 for 7 days for an Innova, Xylo or Scorpio. The drive is roughly 450–550 km, split over two days.

03What is the Bum La Pass taxi fare?

Only local Arunachal-registered vehicles, usually Sumos, Scorpios or Boleros, are allowed on the Bum La road. The day trip including Madhuri Lake typically costs ₹5,000–8,000 per vehicle for up to five or six people. Shared seats of roughly ₹1,000–1,500 are sometimes available. Book through your hotel a day ahead.

04How much is the Arunachal ILP fee?

Under the 2026 Arunachal ILP guidelines, Indian tourists get a Temporary ILP valid for 15 days across the state, applied online with Aadhaar authentication. The schedule lists ₹300 for 15 days, while some portal pages and operators still quote ₹300–500. Budget about ₹300–500 per person and pay what the portal shows. Check current status before you travel.

05Is 5 days enough for Tawang?

Five days is tight. Guwahati to Tawang takes two days each way, which leaves only one full day in Tawang and no spare day for Bum La permits or weather. We recommend six nights minimum, with three nights in Tawang, and seven if you want Bum La, Madhuri Lake and a slower return via Dirang.

06When is Tawang cheapest to visit?

July to September is usually the cheapest, when rain and landslide risk keep visitors away and hotels discount. Late January and February can also be good value, although snow may close Sela or Bum La for days. April to June and October to November are peak, with higher hotel rates and tighter car availability.

07Can I do Tawang in a sedan like a Dzire?

The roads to Tawang are paved most of the way, and sedans do make the trip, but we do not recommend it. Broken stretches, snow near Sela in winter and steep hairpins make an SUV safer and more comfortable. A sedan saves perhaps ₹1,000–1,500 a day. For Bum La you must hire a local vehicle regardless.

08How much does a Tawang trip cost for a couple?

A couple on a 6-night standard trip with a private SUV typically spends ₹65,000–90,000 in total, or ₹32,000–45,000 per person. A honeymoon version with premium rooms, room heaters and a private Bum La day comes to about ₹1,00,000–1,40,000. Flights or trains to Guwahati are extra.

09Do foreigners pay more for a Tawang trip?

Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through an approved Indian tour operator, usually for groups of two or more, with a royalty of about USD 30–50 per person that your operator confirms. Foreigners cannot visit Bum La. Hotels and vehicles cost the same as for Indians. PAP rules change, so check current status before you travel.
