Assam: questions travellers ask
01Is Guwahati worth visiting or just a transit city?
It is worth a full day. Kamakhya Temple, a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra, the Umananda ferry and the ropeway across the river fill a day comfortably, and the Assam State Museum and Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra suit a hot afternoon. Most visitors spend one night here at the start or end of a Meghalaya or Kaziranga trip.
02What are the Kamakhya Temple darshan timings?
Regular darshan usually runs from about 8 am to 1 pm and again from 2.30 pm to 5.15 pm, with a midday closure for the goddess's bhog. Timings shift on festival days, during Ambubachi and on special occasions. Queues form well before opening, so arrive early. Check current status before you travel.
03When does Kaziranga National Park open and close?
Kaziranga reopens in phases each October after the monsoon. In 2025 a limited Bagori circuit opened on 26 September, Kohora in the second week of October and elephant safaris on 1 November; the 2026-27 reopening was expected in October 2026. The park closes around May. Dates depend on flood damage each year, so check current status before you travel.
04How do I reach Majuli from Jorhat?
Drive about 14 km from Jorhat town to Nimati Ghat, then take the government ferry to Kamalabari Ghat on Majuli, which takes about an hour. From Kamalabari it is a short drive to Garamur. Cars and bikes can go on the larger ferries for an extra charge. Ferries run only in daylight, so plan an early start.
05What is Jorhat famous for?
Jorhat is known for tea: the Tocklai Tea Research Institute, founded in 1911, and dozens of estates around town, some with heritage bungalows. It was the last capital of the Ahom kingdom and has the Jorhat Gymkhana Club, founded in 1876. For travellers it is best known as the gateway to Majuli through Nimati Ghat.
06What is Sivasagar famous for?
Sivasagar is famous as the capital of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled Assam for about six centuries. Its best-known monuments are the Rang Ghar royal pavilion, the Talatal Ghar palace, the Shiva Dol beside the 257-acre Sivasagar tank, Kareng Ghar at Garhgaon and the nearby Charaideo Moidams, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2024.
07What is Dibrugarh famous for?
Dibrugarh is famous for tea. It is often called the tea city of India and is surrounded by large estates, several with heritage chang bungalows for guests. It is also known for the Bogibeel road and rail bridge across the Brahmaputra and as the gateway to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and eastern Arunachal.
08When is Manas National Park open?
Manas reopens after the monsoon, in 2025 on 24 September, and the season usually runs until May, though some areas open later if roads need repairs. November to April is the best time, with open tracks and easier sightings. Dates can change each season, so check current status before you travel.
09How far is Pobitora from Guwahati?
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is about 50 km east of Guwahati by road, roughly 1.5 hours by car depending on your starting point and traffic. There is no direct public transport to the gate, so most visitors hire a cab for the day. Guwahati airport is about 70 km away.
