Kaziranga and Northeast wildlife tours: questions

01Is 2 nights enough for Kaziranga?

Yes, for most visitors. Two nights give you two or three jeep safaris across different ranges and an optional dawn elephant ride, which is enough to see rhinos, buffalo, elephants, deer and many birds. Keen photographers or birders should add a third night for the Eastern range and Burapahar.

02Can we do Shillong, Cherrapunji and Kaziranga in 5 nights?

Yes. Two nights in Shillong, one in Sohra and two at Kaziranga work well. The only long day is Shillong to Kaziranga, about 270 km and seven hours. Doing it in fewer nights means dropping either the Sohra night or one safari, which we do not recommend with children.

03Which is better, Manas or Kaziranga?

They are different. Kaziranga has open grassland and the easiest rhino, buffalo and bird sightings in India. Manas is more forested and quieter, with golden langur, Bengal florican and the Bhutan hills as backdrop, but sightings take more patience. Seeing both, as on this trip, shows two faces of the Assam grasslands.

04What is special about Dibru-Saikhowa National Park?

It is a river-island park at the meeting of the Brahmaputra, Lohit and Dibru, explored only by boat. It is famous for its feral horses, Gangetic river dolphins and wetland birds, including the endangered white-winged wood duck. It feels wild and uncrowded compared with Kaziranga.

05Why combine Kaziranga and Nameri for birding?

They hold different birds. Kaziranga is floodplain grassland and wetland, rich in pelicans, storks, raptors and winter ducks. Nameri is foothill forest and shingle river, with hornbills, the white-winged wood duck and ibisbill. Together they cover a broad share of Assam's lowland birds in under a week.

06How do you reach Namdapha National Park?

Fly into Dibrugarh, then drive about 150 km (4.5 hours) east through Tinsukia and Margherita to Miao, the gateway town. From Miao it is 25 km, about an hour, to Deban, where visitors stay inside the park. Park entry permits are issued at the Field Director's office in Miao, and your Arunachal permit is checked at the border.

07Can Kaziranga and Tawang be combined in one trip?

Yes, and they fit well. Kaziranga is on the south bank near Kohora, and the Tawang road starts at Bhalukpong, only about 3 hours away across the Kalia Bhomora bridge. With two nights in Kaziranga, a night at Nameri and six nights in the hills, 9 nights is a comfortable length for both.

08Will I definitely see snow on this trip?

Very likely at Sela Pass between late December and February, where snow usually lies for months. Tawang town gets snow on some winter days but not always. Fresh snowfall is weather-dependent, so no one can promise it on a set date. Early December can have little snow; January is the most reliable month.

09When is Kaziranga open for safaris?

Kaziranga reopens in phases each October after the monsoon and closes around May. In 2025 a limited Bagori circuit opened on 26 September, Kohora in the second week of October and elephant rides on 1 November. The 2026–27 reopening was expected in October 2026. Check current status before you travel.
