Solo trips to Meghalaya and the Northeast: questions
01How much does a budget Meghalaya trip cost?
This plan starts at ₹11,500 per person on twin sharing for four nights, with budget guest houses, breakfast and a private hatchback. Add about ₹600 to ₹1,000 a day for food, and ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 for entry fees, the Dawki boat and the Nongriat guide. Solo travellers pay a single supplement.
02How much does it cost to backpack the Northeast for 10 days?
This route starts at ₹17,500 per person, covering 9 nights of beds, listed meals, a shared Kaziranga jeep seat and Majuli bicycle hire. Budget another ₹4,000–6,000 for shared transport, entry fees and lunches. Flights to Guwahati and from Jorhat are extra. Private rooms raise the cost.
03Is this package good for solo travellers?
Yes. Meghalaya is generally safe and friendly for solo travellers, including women, and the car takes the stress out of shared-taxi timings. The cost per person is higher alone because the room and car are not shared. Solo travellers can often share a Dawki boat with another group to split the fare.
04Is the Northeast safe for solo travellers?
Shillong, Sohra, Nongriat and Kaziranga are well-travelled and generally friendly for solo travellers, including women. Meghalaya now registers every guest on a state app linked to the police, and East Khasi Hills treks need registered guides. Use common sense after dark, share your plans with someone at home and keep our desk's WhatsApp number handy.
05Why not use shared taxis to save money?
Shared sumos from Shillong to Sohra and Dawki leave only when full, drop you in town rather than at the sights, and stop running by mid-afternoon. You would need separate local taxis at each end. For four days, a private hatchback costs a little more but saves a full day of waiting.
06How hard is the walk to Nongriat?
The trail from Tyrna to Nongriat is about 3,500 concrete steps down, 1.5 to 2 hours, and 2 to 2.5 hours back up. The steps are well made, with two steel suspension bridges, but the climb out is steep and humid. Anyone who can climb 20 floors of stairs with rests can manage it. Porters are available in the village.
07How do shared sumos work in Meghalaya?
Shared sumos are jeeps or SUVs that run fixed routes from stands like Bara Bazar in Shillong and leave when all seats are sold. You pay the driver or a counter in cash. Front seats cost a little more. Morning departures are frequent; afternoons thin out, so we give you typical last times.
08Can I skip the Nongriat trek?
Yes. The trek is optional and the guide cost is paid only if you go. Instead, you can spend Day 4 at Eco Park, Dainthlen Falls, the Mawkdok valley viewpoint and the Thangkharang Park sunset. The car stays with you on both options, so the price does not change.
09Do I need a guide for Nongriat?
Yes. Since June 2025, East Khasi Hills requires registered guides for treks and outdoor activities, and this covers the Nongriat trail. We include a registered guide from Tyrna. The trail is also reported closed on Sundays, so we plan the walk on another day. Check current status before you travel.
